Real Newborn Prep: It's Not About The Stroller

When most people think about preparing for a newborn, they think baby registries. They think of strollers engineered by NASA. They think of bassinets that fold up like origami and play Beethoven in surround sound.

But let me tell you a little secret: That’s not real preparation. Real newborn prep is not about gear. It’s about peace. It’s about preparing your baby’s world—and your heart—for the beautiful, messy miracle that’s about to rock your world in the best (and leakiest) way possible.

Let’s break it down together. No overwhelm. Just truth, grace, and a checklist that doesn’t require a second mortgage.

Part 1: Baby-Centered Prep

What your baby actually needs (spoiler: it’s not monogrammed burp cloths)

Your baby is not here for aesthetics.

They are not scrolling Pinterest or judging your nursery theme. They don’t know the difference between a $900 stroller and an empty Amazon box.

What they do need:

  • A safe place to sleep (crib, bassinet, or cozy bedside setup)
  • A properly installed car seat (It’s actually harder than it looks—get it checked!)
  • Diapers. Wipes. More diapers. More wipes.
  • Start with just some newborn gowns and side tie shirts. Later (after the belly button stump shrivels on off) a few soft onesies and footies (zippers > snaps!),
  • Swaddles or blankets for that baby burrito life.
  • A feeding setup—whether that’s bottles and formula or a nursing pillow and some good nipple balm (and definitely a pep talk)

That’s it. Really. You are the main event. Everything else is just set dressing.

Part 2: Mama-Centered Prep

Because the real MVP is you.  You are what your baby needs, what your baby wants.  You are the vital piece of baby gear.  And you are also the one recovering from labor, sweaty bun and all.

Newsflash: you’re about to do something epic. And after all that, you deserve more than a pack of mesh underwear and a pat on the back.

So let’s prep you, too.

Postpartum Survival Kit:

  • A plan. Who’s bringing food? Who’s watching the baby while you shower for the first time in a week?
  • Snacks + water everywhere. Yes, everywhere. Nightstand, bathroom, laundry room. You will be hungrier than a teenage boy at a buffet.
  • Pads, peri bottle, stool softeners, and pain relief.
    Sexy? No. Necessary? YES.

Mental Health Prep:

  • You will cry. Over commercials. Over toast. It’s normal.

  • You’ll forget everything. Also normal.

  • You’ll Google things like “how long can a baby stare at a ceiling fan.”

  • And you’ll worry you’re not doing enough. But you are.

Let go of the guilt, ask for help early, and please don’t try to be a Pinterest board.

Part 3: Soul-Centered Prep

This is where real peace starts to grow.

Babies need cribs. But mamas? We need anchoring. Before the baby comes, spend some time preparing your heart—not just your nursery. Try writing out these Scriptures and taping them to your bathroom mirror (or let’s be honest, the inside of the fridge):

📖 Isaiah 26:3 – You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
📖 Philippians 4:6–7 – Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything... His peace will guard your hearts and minds...

Let your birth plan have some wiggle room. Let your expectations soften like warm bread. Pray over your baby now—her little body, your connection, your mama heart. And remember: God is in every delivery room, with you for every contraction, every diaper change, and every 2 a.m. feed.

Final Thoughts: You’re More Ready Than You Think

You don’t need a master’s degree in swaddling. You don’t need to have every bottle sterilized before labor. You need peace. Support. And a little space to grow into this wildly beautiful new role.

And if you’re looking for a sidekick for those early weeks, the Newborn Success Podclass is here.
